Testing
Assessments and evaluations are the most important tools for recognizing a person’s abilities, competencies, strength and weaknesses.
Advancements in technology and research have made it possible to evaluate a variety of competencies and abilities, for academic, vocational, legal, psychological, neuropsychological and medical questions. Types of evaluations that are available include. These include:
- Psychological Testing (i.e., IQ. Personality, ADHD, etc.).
- Neuropsychological Testing (i.e., dementia, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Stroke, CVA, etc.)
- Psycho-educational Testing (i.e., learning disorder, gifted, etc.)
- Psycho-legal Evaluations (i.e., competency to proceed, insanity, downward departure, etc.)
Psychological testing is designed to diagnose issues that relate to psychological health. Examples may be Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (also known as ADD or ADHD), learning disorders, and more. Psychological testing may also be used to help rule out a diagnosis, or confirm a diagnosis. This type of testing also has a variety of real-world advantages for individuals, healthcare providers and employers. Psychological testing can also be requested by your healthcare provider or insurance company prior to undergoing a surgical procedure so as to delineate for any psychological factors that may help or complicate your medical recovery.
Neuropsychological testing can help to inform physicians in treatment planning and to address the health of the brain. I am often referred clients who are exhibiting either mild or moderate symptoms of memory loss. Testing helps to evaluate and diagnose neurodegenerative disorders, such as dementia, memory loss, and Parkinson’s disease, as well as assess neurological impairment due to stroke, traumatic brain injury, and related issues.
Finally, psycho-educational testing is often used to evaluate students on both ends of the learning spectrum – from testing students to see if they qualify for gifted programs, to testing students those with academic challenges that may be holding them back from academic achievement. It can also be used by adults and businesses for career assessments.
